    This position is based at our Iowa Events Center. The Iowa Events Center features a variety of flexible spaces to host events of all types and sizes. The Iowa Events Center is a unique combination of three venues under one roof: Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall, and Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. The complex is flexible to meet the needs of events of all types and sizes.     The Catering Barback is responsible to have assigned bars set-up & prepped prior to catered events.  The Barback will assist with receiving and storage of product, prepare & stock bars.  All equipment will be maintained, stored, cleaned and organized.  The employee must maintain excellent attendance and be available to work events as scheduled per business need.

    • Responsible to have assigned bars moved and set-up according to the Banquet Event Order (BEO) on time for catered events. This includes transitioning a bar set-up to alternate location during an event.
    • Accountable for all received inventory & storing product while maintaining clean, safe & organized area, and reporting all unsafe working condition & injuries immediately to manager on duty (MOD).
    • Transport all required beverage to the bars for catering events including, but not limited, beer, wine & liquor, garnishes, ice and mixer products.
    • Responsible for prep, stock and re-stock of all assigned bars, including changing out assigned kegs.
    • Responsible for completing accurate transfer paperwork with bartender every time an item is stocked
    • Responsible for cleaning, sanitizing & organizing of work spaces and garbage disposal
    • Available via radio communications
    • Communicate with guests, co-workers and MOD in a respectful manner
    • Monitors guest activity in accordance with company policy disallowing outside beverages
    • Learn beverage products when training is available including beer, wine & liquor products.
    • May assist the assigned bartender serving beverages as required by the MOD. Must check guest’s ID in accordance with state/federal regulations to verify minimum age requirement for the purchase of alcoholic beverages.  The Barback must serve alcoholic beverages responsibly in accordance with company policy including, on occasion, “slow down” or “cut off” of beverage service to certain guests.



    • One or more years’ experience bar-backing or similar position in a restaurant or related food industry preferred.
    • Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task, and effectively prioritize in a continuously changing event environment.
    • Ability to be self-directed on tasks as well as work with a team.
    • Ability to work a flexible event based schedule including nights & weekends.

    Intellectual/Social demands:

    While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to multi-task and prioritize work under time limits and with moderate to high pressure situations.  Position requires constant attention to details of specified standards or written directions including:  following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions.  Position requires frequent use of communication skill with co-workers and management staff in basic English language and some basic reading in English language. Position requires frequent ability to work on a task independently and frequently work as a part of a team for a variety of tasks.  Ability to learn proper sanitation, cleaning techniques.  Learn & follow state/federal guidelines for proper and responsible serving of alcoholic beverages.


    Physical demands:

    While performing duties of the job, the employee will constantly be required to grasp, reach with arms, pull, push and lift.  Employee will frequently be required to climb, stoop, kneel to set-up/teardown events and move product.  Employee will constantly be required to stand and walk to move items around the facility. Employees will frequently be required to lift up to 80 pounds, push/pull up to 160 pounds to move a ½ barrel / keg. Vision requires ability to constantly adjust focus, have depth perception & use of peripheral vision to set-up events and work in a crowded event environment. Ability to frequently hear communication of others is a loud food production environment or event environment.


    Work environment:

    The duties of this position are performed primarily indoors, with some exposure to outdoors on each shift.  Exposure to a loud environment including frequently communicating with guests or co-workers in a loud environment.  Working around loud food production machinery and working in crowded workspaces and catered events with 1000 guests or more. Employees will frequently work on tasks independently. Exposure to potentially intoxicated guests.
