  • Overview

    The Back of the House Steward is responsible for all back of house areas being set and ready prior to events. The Catering Steward will assist in pulling and staging all equipment prior to set-up, during the event and during clean-up. All catering equipment will be maintained, stored and inventoried. Assist in other areas of Catering as required. The employee must maintain excellent attendance and be available to work events as scheduled per business need.


    This position is based at our Iowa Events Center. The Iowa Events Center features a variety of flexible spaces to host events of all types and sizes. The Iowa Events Center is a unique combination of three venues under one roof: Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall, and Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. The complex is flexible to meet the needs of events of all types and sizes.     • Place clean dishes, utensils or equipment in proper storage areas
    • Assist catering staff with buffet sets and break down as needed
    • Reporting equipment damage and/or repairs to manager
    • Assist in keeping dock areas clean and organized
    • Deliver food to function area as assigned
    • Sort and remove trash or compost and clean after usage
    • Sweep and/or scrub all floors in the back of house area
    • Clean up spills and/or breakage on the event floor
    • Maintains a positive and compliant employee relations climate
    • Ensures compliance with health, sanitation, safety and employment regulations by clearly communicating standards and procedures to all staff
    • Maintain a clean and organized back of house areas for the food and beverage operation


    • Past experience working in a kitchen, building maintenance, or banquet facility preferred.
    • Ability to positively communicate and create a productive work climate with other co-workers & managers
    • Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize in a continuously changing event environment.
    • Ability to be self-directed on tasks as well as work with a team.
    • Ability to work a flexible event based schedule including nights, weekends and long hours

    Intellectual/Social demands:


    While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to multi-task and prioritize work under time limits and with moderate to high pressure situations.  Position requires constant attention to details of specified standards or written directions including:  following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions.  Position requires frequent use of communication skill with co-workers and management staff in basic English language and some basic reading in English language. Position requires frequent ability to work on a task independently and frequently work as a part of a team for a variety of tasks.  Ability to learn proper sanitation and cleaning techniques.


    Physical demands:


    While performing duties of the job, the employee will constantly be required to grasp, reach with arms, pull, push and lift.  Employee will frequently be required to climb, stoop, kneel to set-up/teardown events and move product.  Employee will constantly be required to stand and walk to move items around the facility. Employees will frequently be required to lift up to 75 pounds, push/pull up to 150 lbs. Vision requires ability to constantly adjust focus, have depth perception & use of peripheral vision to set-up events and work in a crowded event environment. Ability to frequently hear communication of others is a loud food production environment or event environment.


    Work environment:


    The duties of this position are performed primarily indoors with some exposure to outdoors on each shift.  Exposure to loud food production environment and moderate to loud event environment.  Exposure to events with thousands of people in attendance.  Exposure to wet floors and crowded workspace.  Exposure to hot plates, dishes and kitchen equipment.
