  • Overview

    Under general supervision by the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Technician (Electrician) is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of the electrically powered systems and equipment including distribution systems and equipment along with various general maintenance related tasks including plumbing, painting, trades and grounds keeping. Most of the work takes place in a temperature controlled environment. Power tools, hand tools and uniforms are provided.


    This position is based at our Greater Richmond Convention Center. Located in Virginia’s capital, the Greater Richmond Convention Center is one of the most desirable meeting destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region. The 700,000-square-foot facility sits on 5 and a half city blocks. Interior accommodations include 178,159 square feet of exhibit space, meeting and banquet rooms and the 30,550-square foot Grand Ballroom. Parking consists of two adjoining decks that hold 1,540 vehicles and an additional 4,600 spaces are within a six-block radius. For out of town guests, a plethora of three to five star accommodations are within close reach to the center. Nearby attractions include The Diamond, a venue that hosts professional and collegiate baseball, the Virginia State Capitol Building and Virginia War Memorial.     • Repair, install, replace and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances using necessary hand tools and testing instruments
    • Inspect and test electrical lighting, signal, communication and power circuits and equipment
    • Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment, using suitable testing instruments
    • Examine and test elements of electrical systems to locate obvious faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes
    • Replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and appliances
    • Renew circuits either by isolating and cutting out defective wiring and replacing it with new wiring, or by splicing ends of broken wires
    • Report discrepancies or necessary follow-ups to supervisor
    • Perform and/or manage the installations and break downs of electrical services for events
    • Perform duties and responsibilities with view toward Department goals and energy conservation
    • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, schematic manufacturer’s specifications and other reference materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures
    • Prepare and submit requisitions for materials required to complete assigned tasks
    • Plan work to ensure cost effective use of labor and materials
    • As required, estimate materials needed and record time and materials expended on each work order
    • Perform other general maintenance related tasks including plumbing, painting, trades and grounds keeping
    • Operate equipment used in the maintenance of conventions facilities such as forklifts, floor scrubbers, scissor lifts, and other maintenance equipment
    • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
    • Perform other duties as required


    • Electrical codes pertaining to the maintenance and installation of electrical systems
    • Proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions
    • Operational characteristics, services and activities of electrical maintenance programs 
    • Repair and maintenance in various other maintenance related functions including plumbing, painting, trades and grounds keeping
    • Metasys BAS and Lutron lighting control systems
    • Relevant federal, state, and local regulations
    • Basic computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc.)
    • Customer Service practices


    Ability To:

    • Work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities
    • Work effectively under pressure in meeting deadlines
    • Work with minimal supervision
    • Analyze job related challenges, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of organizational objectives
    • Perform other general maintenance related tasks including plumbing, painting, trades and grounds keeping
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and facility users
    • Work a flexible schedule including early mornings, days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, extended (long) work days and extended numbers of days



    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Minimum of five (5) years electrical experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent GED


    Licenses or Certificates:

    • Possession of a Journeyman’s electrical license
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a current CPR certificate
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Virginia driver’s license
