  • Overview

    Utilizing independent judgment, the Director of Safety & Security directs, manages, supervises and coordinates the activities and operations of the Safety & Security Department and the event-staffing program for the facility.

     

    This position is based at our Greater Richmond Convention Center. Located in Virginia’s capital, the Greater Richmond Convention Center is one of the most desirable meeting destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region. The 700,000-square-foot facility sits on 5 and a half city blocks. Interior accommodations include 178,159 square feet of exhibit space, meeting and banquet rooms and the 30,550-square foot Grand Ballroom. Parking consists of two adjoining decks that hold 1,540 vehicles and an additional 4,600 spaces are within a six-block radius. For out of town guests, a plethora of three to five star accommodations are within close reach to the center. Nearby attractions include The Diamond, a venue that hosts professional and collegiate baseball, the Virginia State Capitol Building and Virginia War Memorial.     Responsibilities

    • Provide overall management for all services and activities involved in facility and event security, facility admissions, and emergency preparedness
    • Plan, develop and implement programs to ensure the security/safety of facility staff, users, guests and property
    • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; identify opportunities for improvements and review with the Assistant General Manager; implement improvements
    • Select, train, motivate and evaluate security\event staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures
    • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for the Department and all other assigned programs and functions; meet with staff on a regular basis to identify and resolve challenges; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures
    • Assist the Event Managers in the development of event specific security/safety and staffing plans
    • Coordinate the scheduling of external event staffing personnel including, but not limited to, off duty police officers, Fire Marshal, EMT’s, peer group security, other safety and security personnel
    • Manage and participate in the development and administration of the Security Department annual budget; forecast additional funds needed for staffing, training, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor expenditures; implement adjustments as necessary
    • Plan and implement safety and security training programs for staff
    • Develop and facilitate a safety committee, focused on workplace safety and facility emergency preparedness
    • Provide effective direction to staff in emergency response situations
    • Monitor/maintain the facility’s computerized badge making, security camera system and access control system
    • Establish/maintain effective working relationships with local, state and federal law enforcement and life safety agencies
    • Prepare and present regular staff reports and other related correspondence
    • Review and recommend modifications to security and safety programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate
    • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing
    • Provides highly responsible staff assistance to the Assistant General Manager and General Manager.
    • Serves as the Facility Safety Officer and routinely serve as a Manager on Duty
    • Perform other duties as required

    Qualifications

    Experience:

    • Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible security experience in a management capacity of a public assembly facility or a law enforcement agency associated with providing services to a public assembly facility or special events
    • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory responsibility

    Education / Training:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, business administration or other related field (additional experience may be substituted for formal education)
    • Graduation from IAVM’s Academy for Venue Safety and Security (AVSS)
    • Graduation from IAVM’s Venue Management School (VMS)
    • Graduation from IAVM’s Venue Management School Graduate Institute

    Licenses or Certificates:

    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Virginia driver’s license
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Virginia State Security Guard Certification
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a current CPR and 1st Aid certificate

    Knowledge Of:

    • Operational characteristics, services and activities of public assembly facility security and safety programs
    • Crowd management and control techniques; Principles of supervision and training
    • Personnel management as well as EEOC, FLSA, OSHA and ADA regulations
    • Fire and public safety regulations
    • Relevant federal, state, and local regulations
    • Terminology used in entertainment and convention center settings
    • Principles of budget preparation and control
    • Computer skills in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point)
    • Time clock, security camera and access control systems

    Ability To:

    • Develop comprehensive event staffing plans
    • Develop and implement emergency preparedness plans for a large public assembly facility
    • Plan, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinates; Provide leadership for Security personnel
    • Analyze challenges, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of organizational objectives
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and facility users as well as local, state and federal law enforcement and life safety agencies
    • Communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing
    • Work a flexible schedule including early mornings, days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, extended (long) workdays and extended numbers of days

    Intellectual/Social demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame. This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients.

     

    Physical demands:

    • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc.; occasionally moves about inside the office to access storage areas, cabinets and office machinery; constantly moves about the facility and event sites before, during and after events to service clients and supervise staff; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information, occasionally lifts/carries/transports/sets objects and equipment weighing up to (50) pounds.

     

    Work environment:

    • The duties of this position are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in the weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate to loud during events and minimal during non-event times.
