The Engineer performs various routine and advanced inspecting, servicing, installing, and contract oversight of mechanical equipment, furnishings, and fixtures. The facilities, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, located at the University of Rhode Island Kingston campus, and the position is under the Director of Facilities' general direction.



  • Responsible for all services and activities involved in the Ryan Center & Boss Ice Arena's maintenance and operations, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, generators, plumbing, chillers, refrigeration, boilers, commercial kitchen, drain cleaning, and associated equipment.
  • Monitor and adjust building automation controls to achieve optimum comfort and energy savings while balancing the clients, customers, and tenants' needs.
  • Participate in the execution of events from an operational standpoint; including oversight of changeovers, event setups and takedowns, cleaning, and whatever needed to execute the event successfully.,
  • Assist with snow removal and maintenance of walkways and parking lots surrounding the arena by working with full-time staff, part-time staff, and contractors.
  • Assists Director of Facilities in developing an energy management program for electrical consumption, water, sewer, and natural gas consumption within the facility
  • Respond to alarms from building automation and life safety systems
  • Maintain a professional and organized atmosphere including but not limited to as-builts, blueprints, tool inventory as well as other areas related to Facilities Engineering
  • Develop and maintain an accurate record-keeping system including; hazardous materials program, work order recordings, preventive maintenance recordings, material safety data sheets, and other required records and permits. Maintain knowledge of changes in pertinent Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Order supplies and materials for maintenance programs within budget guidelines; receive and maintain supplies.
  • Participate in the operation budget preparing; additional forecast funds needed for equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures, and implement adjustments as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Expert in general maintenance & repair.
  • Associate, bachelor, or equivalent experience with day-to-day heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, electrical, generators, plumbing, and refrigeration.
  • Familiarity with the use and maintenance of forklifts, snowplows, man lifts, and other like equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and vehicle.
  • The familiarity of OSHA guidelines. Certifications and previous training desirable.
  • Must have the ability to stand for multiple hours at a time, climb stairs, and lift 75+ pounds, unaided.
  • Capable of working a flexible schedule and extended hours, including but not limited to working early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to regular business hours. Also, on-call after hours.
  • Oral and written communication skills in the English language with experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills, supervisory, and organizational skills to function in a multi-task environment.
  • Possession of an electrical license is desirable
