This position oversees management of the Catering Department and is a key position for effective and profitable operation of the business. This role is responsible for overseeing the direction of the Catering Department’s daily activities in accordance with Spectra Food Service policies, procedures and objectives to ensure guest satisfaction, profitability and providing a positive, productive and compliant work environment. The Catering Manager is responsible for the effective management and operation of the banquet team including event planning support, scheduling, room set-up, compliance with food handling policies, safety, employee training and supervision, adherence to budget and cost requirements and any other project / task assigned by the AGM/Director of Catering. The Catering Manager must provide a consistently high level of oversight and operation/personnel support to ensure the smooth execution of all assigned events. Manager will actively supervise, coach, counsel, direct, train and mentor employees in meeting company quality standards; also discipline and recommend employees for termination. This position requires applicant to maintain excellent attendance and be available to work a variable event-driven schedule which includes early mornings, evenings and weekends.


  • Oversee the Catering Department staff, providing leadership and support, ensuring all events are executed according to the Banquet Event Order (BEO) outline / guidelines
  • Support and oversee work of Beverage employees as required
  • Consistently work closely with & constantly communicate with other Catering Sales Managers and Chefs to ensure the successful execution of events and foster a positive work climate with management
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients
  • Provide a positive employee climate for all employees and temporary staff following all company policy/procedures and best Work with Human Resources/AGM on complex employee situations
  • Ability to read, understand and execute any changes to BEO’s that are communicated
  • Monitor and control Catering Dept. costs (i.e. labor costs, beverage costs, supplies and equipment). Coordinate with client event budgets to maximize revenue, minimize expenses, and provide consistent quality guest service
  • Meet with clients as needed to confirm / clarify understanding Banquet Event Order (BEO) requirements
  • Adaptable to work in a fast-paced, high pressure environment to organize and orchestrate any last-minute changes to event details effectively
  • Post all contracted function sheets and provide clear instructions to Banquet Supervisors / Coordinators and to ensure the success of the function
  • Supervise the daily operations of the Catering area (examples: maintain supplies, review set-up and food and beverage preparation and service) to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, Banquet Event Orders and safety regulations to ensure optimal level of service, quality and hospitality
  • Ability to accurately schedule a staff of 20 or more people for complex event schedules including communicating temp needs
  • Accurately monitor employee attendance and log on attendance Will deliver attendance or performance progressive discipline as required
  • Responsible for monitoring the staff’s appearance, attitude and degree of professionalism to ensure their strict adherence to Spectra Food Service and Hospitality standards
  • Required to occasionally serve alcohol and ability to ensure all staff members serving alcohol are following all Spectra / Iowa Events Center policy / procedures in accordance with local / state / federal Report any concerns to the AGM / Director of Catering
  • Trains, coaches, mentors & evaluates Catering Servers in accordance with the standards of the company polices and guidelines
  • Prepare the payroll reports or other reports as required
  • Perform special projects and other responsibilities as assigned


  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associates (A.A. or A.S.) degree with hospitality, event management or culinary concentration or similar degree from two-year college or technical Bachelor’s Degree in Event Management, Culinary Management, Business or similar field preferred. Degree requirement may be substituted for equivalent years of industry experience
  • Two or more years’ catering, banquet, hospitality, or food & beverage experience preferred
  • One or more years’ experience leading a team, in a Supervisory or Management role
  • Prior experience in the field of hospitality with experience in a catering, sales, conference services, culinary and/or banquets is highly desired
  • Demonstrated experience / knowledge of sales, revenue management, employee training & motivation is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability / experience consistently making appropriate, professional, independent decisions
  • Advanced proficiency with computers in a Windows-based platform, including excellent & accurate typing skills, and advanced MS Excel, Outlook (email), and Word skills
  • Ability to be available by company provided cell phone
  • Ability to consistently work a varied schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
